Bofo knows the Bible. Each week, he’s sharing a Bible verse with Carl,
and now you too can join in on the fun! Bible verses taken from the NRSV
translation.

The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come
from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From going to and fro on the
earth, and from walking up and down on it.” (Job 1:7)

Give strong drink to one who is perishing, and wine
to those in bitter distress; let them drink and forget their poverty,
and remember their misery no more. (Proverbs 31:6-7)

Let a woman learn in silence with full submission.
I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to
keep silent. (1 Timothy 2:11-12)

Parents shall not be put to death for their children,
nor shall children be put to death for their parents; only for their own
crimes may persons be put to death (Deuteronomy 24:16)

God said to Abraham, ‘As for you, you shall
keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.
This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your
offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall
circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the
covenant between me and you. Throughout your generations every male among
you shall be circumcised when he is eight days old, including the slave
born in your house and the one bought with your money from any foreigner
who is not of your offspring. Both the slave born in your house and the
one bought with your money must be circumcised. So shall my covenant be
in your flesh an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male who is not
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people;
he has broken my covenant.’ (Genesis 17:9-14)

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised
in the flesh of his foreskin. (Genesis 17:24)

They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t
give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace
to us. We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you
become like us by circumcising all your males. Then we will give you our
daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We’ll settle among you
and become one people with you. But if you will not agree to be circumcised,
we’ll take our sister and go.” Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and
his son Shechem. The young man, who was the most honored of all his father’s
household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted
with Jacob’s daughter. All the men who went out of the city gate agreed
with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s
sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked
the unsuspecting city, killing every male. (Genesis 34: 14-19;24-25)

…The slave may plainly decalre, “I love my master,
my wife, and my children. I would rather not not go free.” If he does
this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take
him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the
slave will belong to his master forever. (Exodus 21:5,6)

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a
house with a quarrelsome wife. (Proverbs 21:9)

Whenever a woman has her menstrual period, she will
be ceremonially unclean for seven days. If you touch her during that time,
you will be defiled until evening. The same applies if you touch an object
on which she sits, whether it is her bedding or any piece of furniture.
(Leviticus 15:19-23)

And he went up from thence unto Bethel and as he was going up by the
way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him,
and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he
turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD.
And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and
two children of them. (2 Kings 2:23-24)

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will
not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please
the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But
he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners (Exodus 21:7-8).
